The progressive and reformist forces think of the young

Young people are among the groups most affected by the economic and social crisis caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. They have lost their jobs or seen their working conditions deteriorate, they have seen teachers vary from face-to-face models to distance learning models. , their social interactions were limited, their ability to work and travel between different regions was hindered.

As a result, there is a serious increase in cases of young people with emotional and mental distress. The analyzes found that there were no effective responses from national governments to help young people with their mental health problems during and after the pandemic. There has been an exponential increase in requests for help from children and families moving in a state of educational fragility, an increase in school dropouts, greater psychological precariousness, with consequent personal and relational crises. These are profound diseases that have long-term consequences if they are not treated in a timely and appropriate manner, and which risk leading to a new dramatic emergency.

The young people above all, together with the women, bear the cost of the crisis of 2008 and the pandemic of 2020. Now, with the international crisis, the situation will get worse. The almost blocked social elevator that does not allow you to participate and build your own future; Wages that only increase with seniority; insufficient education; many political forces that focus on retirement and not on how young people should work, a terrible climate crisis that risks handing over to future generations a world in which it is difficult to live.

All elements that generate great mistrust: less than one out of two young Italians say they are optimistic about their future. As Professor Alessandro Rosina well said “even more today than in the past, the new generations can be understood as the way through which society experiences the new of the changing world. If they are well prepared and placed in the right conditions, they are the part of society that best connects their potential with the possibilities of the transformations.Conversely, the young risk being the first to see their prerogatives expire, to find themselves more exposed to old and new risks with their frailties.

The reformist and progressive forces must necessarily start from here, from the society’s drive, from the young people. It is not a coincidence that the Democratic Party strongly supported, in examining the governance of the PNRR, the creation of a reward clause for youth and women’s employment.

A “transversality” linked to generational and gender inequalities, which provides a concrete and concrete answer to a structural phenomenon in this country. But I am also thinking about the other proposals that we have made to the government: the strengthening of the public civil service, the state guarantee for the first home mortgage for young people, the transition to qualification degrees for a real renewal of the professions , the possibility to register. at the same time in more than one course of study, the increase of 13 billion on the education and research mission, with an investment to encourage girls to enroll in Stem degrees, investments in social infrastructure including kindergarten.

The health economy creates jobs for women directly and indirectly. It gives young people the safety net that allows everyone to plan for the future without family and children becoming a reason for abandonment or an obstacle. We have made proposals for the reform of the curriculum; for skills development and leadership, training and job support services.

We work for a stronger and more youth-friendly education and training system and prosperity. Permanent resources are needed for policies for children, schools, research and universities, to combat educational poverty and to leave early school and to multiply the opportunities of the new generations. A policy training for young people from school to work. Hence the solution of the generational question which is one of the main problems of our country and our time. Now these proposals must be strengthened and explained during this short election campaign.

The generation question is the mirror of the Italian question, why our country does not grow and does not invest in the quality of young people, education, work. The new Democratic Party has made it their priority to create a “youth mission” that not only puts youth policy in line, but redesigns the heart of political direction. that Italy should give itself.
