In recent months, more than eight hundred children and adolescents from the war in Ukraine have arrived in Ticino, as well as other non-Italian-speaking children from other places. Due to the high number of non-Italian speaking young people and the possible permanence of some of them even in the school year 2022/2023, the Education, Culture and Sports Department, in collaboration with the Languages and Sports Foundation, has developed an exceptional range of intensive Italian courses, distributed in all regions of the canton and planned for the months of July and August. D.uplice, declares the Decs, the aim of the initiative: “On the one hand we want to promote a rapid and effective linguistic and social integration of non-Italian-speaking children and young people in the region, on the other hand we want to facilitate the ordinary integration work that continue to guarantee schools in the next school year ”.
Courses dedicated to non-Italian speaking students of primary and middle school age are optional, the department reminds us. They are taught by some of the more than two hundred vocational teachers of Ticino schools. The courses last one or two weeks and include Italian lessons accompanied in the morning and some cases of sports, cultural and leisure activities in the afternoon with other children and teenagers who are already enrolled in the courses organized by languages and sports. Participation in courses for non-Italian-speaking children and adolescents for the benefit of social benefits (for example for young people who have an S-license, attributed to the canton of Ticino at the time of the course and for the benefit of social benefits) is free and is provided by Canton pays, also refers to federal contributions for the integration of foreigners. The DECS also reminds that for students aged 15 to 18 living in Ticino from Ukraine who have attended post-compulsory education (high school or vocational training), the Q-UA (Qualification for Ukraine) project will also continue in the summer, from Institute managed. of Transition and Support (ITS).
