The Project

The project “Protect Bees with us – Cognitive survey on the decline of bees in the Upper Tiber Valley”, which qualifies as “Path for Transversal Skills and Orientation”, was approved by the Senate for participation in the “Senato & Ambiente” competition selected, started. in the school year 2019-2020, and in the framework of training activities aimed at the school world and carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

With this project, the “Franchetti-Salviani” Ttcnico Pole, in addition to offering a broad survey on a global problem, that of the death of bees, which affected many countries of the European Union and is at the center of the new EU. Strategy for Biodiversity confirms its vocation to place itself in the service of the territory with a view to service learning, active collaborative relationships with entities, institutions, associations operating in the territory and in general with all its production reality. In 2016, Felcos Umbria and Apimed launched the initiative for the creation of a network of “Comuni Amici delle Api”, to which the Tifernate municipality joined in 2017.

Pupils, following an initial consultation of Arpa Umbria, a regulatory framework at European level on the issue and a public consultation aimed at the entire school population to examine the sensitivity and awareness of this issue, conducted several auditions for a complete view of the situation of the bees in the Upper Tiber Valley.

For the students, it was interesting to discover how much these valuable insects are indispensable to humans; without them we would not be surrounded by the variety of plants, herbs and flowers that characterize our landscape and our tables would be without many kinds of fruits and vegetables. In fact, the future of the planet and the conservation of global biodiversity depend on pollinators, and in particular on bees. Care should also be taken to look at the most endangered forests, as they are less protected than the apes mellifera, which our beekeepers pay attention to.

The factors that contribute to bee deaths are numerous and often act in synergy, but in the Upper Tiber Valley they are essentially reduced to three: climate crisis, intensive agriculture, introduction of alien species (Varroa Destructor). In the light of the results of the survey, the students suggested the local government to be active in achieving some of the objectives contained in the decision to join the network of the “Comuni Amici delle Api “To join.
