ANCODIS: Switching between school and work or PCTO?

ANCODIS – The tragic event of the young student who was killed in an accident during the implementation of the PCTO project deserves the condolences of the whole school community and the need to start a series of reflections on this subject .

According to the law n. 53/2003 which introduced it and Law no. 107/2015, which made the planned paths compulsory, the Alternanza School Work, now called PCTO “Pathways for transversal skills and orientation”, is a learning methodology that schools implement as part of the school curriculum and therefore the structural component of the student. Training “to increase students’ work opportunities and orientation skills”.

Moving from the not-so-happy definition of “alternation” to the definition of “paths”, we can understand the function that these activities perform in terms of knowledge of the territory from an economic, cultural, social and political point of view. ; Orientation of the personal professions, interests and learning styles of our students; active participation in training processes.
Therefore, PCTOs have little, and can have nothing to do with the establishment of an individual employment relationship.

We can not yet imagine that the education of our children takes place solely and exclusively behind the school forests, but it requires constant contact with the society that surrounds them.
For the realization of a conscious life and work project it is necessary to create a training offer that is based on the combination of training and application moments as a kind of reconstruction of the unity between learning and real life.

It must be recognized that the school is no longer the only training company, but coexists with the complexity of our society, with the speed of information, with multiple and differentiated cultural models and reference values and with an economic system based on competition and globalization.

If until recently education and training coincided with the educational institute, today the training needs are also met by other agencies with educational purposes such as social services, to the person, to the culture, to the volunteering with which it is fulfilled. can compete to achieve their own training project. . In fact, it would be anachronistic to downplay the importance of PCTOs in the education and training of our children.

The value of these pathways would be as they deprive further growth opportunities, such as study trips abroad, participation in transnational mobility activities for learning and vocational training purposes, apprenticeships and so on.
In technical and professional institutions, therefore, PCTOs form the profession which concerns their training offerings.

It is the design capacity of each institution that makes the difference. In fact, children gain skills, knowledge, skills and competencies that can be acquired in the world of work through the efforts of teachers who design meaningful and contextualized paths into the training profiles of different fields of study.
After all, the activities of the PCTO and synergy have to be co-ordinated with the tutor of the host institution and it can be assumed that there are very few cases where the children are treated only as workers.

Let us first ask the question of raising training and controls on health and safety at work for teachers, students and, above all, companies.
